Our instructors have more time to personalize instruction to the needs and learning style of each student because, with our curricula, they don’t need to develop daily lesson plans for each of their classes. Instructors also have more time to focus on their students than most brick-and-mortar instructors.
Regardless of the subject matter, our instructors share one goal: to develop independent learners. During the elementary grade-levels, students receive more day-to-day guidance. Much like in a traditional classroom. As the student moves to middle- and high-school level, the learning model is flipped. The student first studies the topic by themselves—working through engaging and highly interactive curricula—and then applies the knowledge by solving problems and doing practical work. If they struggle with a specific lesson or concept, their teacher works one-to-one with the student to help bridge the knowledge gap. Our instructors have found that allowing students to take ownership of their learning helps them develop better independent work habits.
Communication is key to the success of any online education program. That’s why instructors communicate frequently with their students via e-mail, in threaded online discussion boards, during online sessions, and even on the phone. In fact, many students find that the personal attention they receive allows them to get to know their instructor—and their instructor to know them—better than some of their teachers in a brick-and-mortar setting where they were 1 of 25 or more students in a classroom.
Instructors hold live, online sessions at least once a week. These interactive sessions are used to introduce a new concept or review challenging or complex concepts or lessons. This is also a time when students can get real-time answers to questions and connect with other students in the course. All sessions are recorded—so if a student misses a session or wants to review the material, they can watch it anytime and as often as they choose. Students also have the option to attend national instructional sessions in addition to the live, online sessions held by their own instructor. The national sessions can help a student catch up if they miss their own instructor’s session, review material they are struggling with, or get a different teacher’s approach to the topic. The national sessions also provide an opportunity to connect with other students around the country taking the same course.
